How To Deal With A Workplace Emergency

Workplace emergencies are a normal part of life and regardless of all the precaution measures, they can still happen. That’s why it is important for all employees to know what to do in an emergency situation and how to deal with workplace safety.

How To Deal With Workplace Safety

Taking the right steps at the right time can sometimes make the difference between life and death. To make it easier for people to remember what to do, we came up with the acronym STOP, which includes 4 essential steps:

1. Stop what you are doing

All working activities should be stopped as soon as there is something wrong. In case the accident was caused by a machine, that device should be stopped immediately. The safety of the employees is much more important than a few extra minutes of work. Ignoring this step can lead to more accidents or aggravate the current situation.

2. Think of what happened and why

Try to assess the situation quickly and to find the cause of the accident, in order to prevent things from escalating. Keep your cool and decide what emergency services need to be contacted.

Find the closest first aid kit and decide which persons need urgent assistance. Also, think of the person that is the most suited to give first aid care (maybe it's you or someone else that has training and experience with this).

3. Organize your efforts

If you are the person in charge of first aid, try to stay well organized and to give calm and clear instructions to those involved. Administer first aid to the most critical injuries first.

4. Prepare and protect the victims

The purpose of first aid should be to keep the person safe until the medical personnel arrives. Then, the victim will be transported to a hospital. So make sure that the area is prepared for the emergency rescuers, free of obstacles and clutter.

The victim should be protected from further injury and taken care of until the professionals arrive. Dealing with an emergency at the workplace is a stressful situation, but if you keep your calm and follow the STOP procedure, you will be able to overcome it.
